Some Assembly Required

It is not often we pamper ourselves with total immersion in a favorite (art) medium...FOR FUN. Well, Saturday I did just that. Six hours of uninterrupted creation, in various forms...and it was divine. {{First of all, I HAVE to give a huge shout out to Eye of the Dog Art Center, whose vision is being realized and they are SHARING it with everyone. So you should go and get you some...it's pretty cool. And they serve wine...HELLO!}} Beverly's "Found, Funky & Fun Assemblage Workshop" was just the coolest. We foraged thru Bev's amazing collections of lost and found treasures & also brought items for swapping with other workshop participants, then went to town. Premeditated ideas were tossed on their ass as it became an exercise of letting go and giving intuition a turn at the wheel. Trying to lose control on purpose is hard...especially in only 6 hours. By mid-day, I started to get into the groove and as soon as the flow started pouring, class was over. That is fine though, as it was great to hang out with some awesome women and get out of my comfort zone of 2D work. Here are some pics from class:

Hi,
I'm Stephanie. Remember me? Probably not, I haven't been on here since LAST YEAR???!!! WTH? oops. Consistency isn't a strong-suit of mine. By golly I try, though. Anyways...going to try and write more on here. It's nice to share my creative musings, etc.

So, here is something I'm currently working on. The home office. It's awfully boring and disorganized. The remedy is coming. Today I will set off to assemble the IKEA shelving purchased last week (this will probably take all day long...you know IKEA assembly is no small task). Here is my "before" picture. I know you totally expected me to work in this impeccably cute & aesthetically pleasing wonderland...but nope. I hope to turn that around and make some order out of the current chaos that is my office.

Seriously, kids, don't let the EASTside of I-35 scare you! It's full of wonderful art, culture and diversity and it's all waiting for you on this, the last weekend of the East Austin Studio Tour. So, get your bikes out or good walking shoes and be a tourist!

My work can be seen at #43 on the map...2710 E. Cesar Chavez, just west of Pleasant Valley. I'm in the back, under a tent. Saturday around 1, the lovely ladies of Guy Town will be coming by to sarenade us all with their twang and time.

Tiles & Trivets Workshop with Stephanie Nance
Thursday, November 5th 6:30 – 9:30 pm

This workshop offers an introduction for proper slab rolling techniques in order to produce decorative tiles, trivets, coasters, etc. Great for adults and beginners who desire to explore in a new medium and wonderful for experienced potters yearning to experiment with different clay techniques. Rolling and pressing textures into the surface of your slabs opens the door wide for all kinds of surface decoration. Students will walk away from class with their heads swirling with ideas for more fun projects to do on their own and a handmade work of art! Supplies provided. Paint your pieces with a one fire cone 06 glaze. Class held in Clay Studio. Limit 12 students. $29/ 1 class

Stamps and Appliqués Workshop with Stephanie Nance
Thursday, November 12th 6:30 – 9:30 pm

This specialty workshop will focus on making bisque-ware stamps and appliqué (a smaller ornament or device applied to another surface) molds for use in your future ceramic projects. An easy way to build your collection of tools for surface decoration; stamping and applying small appliqués to wares add ornament, interest and texture to plain surfaces. Students will leave knowing how to make & use their new tools. Supplies provided and pieces will be bisque fired only. Class held in Clay Studio. Limit 12 students. $29/ 1 class

Exploring Texture Workshop with Stephanie Nance
Thursday, November 19th 6:30 – 9:30 pm

The pliability of clay offers its users never-ending opportunities when it comes to surface design. This class is loosely designed as to give you the opportunity to experiment to your hearts desire making textures with unassuming items like, doilies, nails, cake decorating tips, fabric, buttons, etc. Feel free to bring items to share in making texture “test tiles.” We’ll take notes on what you and others do, so you may carry these processes on to your future projects. okay, i'll admit it (if it's not obvious), Facebook is crack. it's become an unnecessary evil in my world. a world in which i need to be more productive and organize some affairs. i have a super busy fall and need to focus! so, this is it....i'm breaking up with Facebook....for awhile. a holiday is more like it. i love keeping up with everyone and in the isolated biz that art can be, and the social person i am...it is a welcomed treat.

that being said, i do have a business to run and an online presence that needs tending, so i won't be completely gone...just personally in absentia. my email is listed in my info...so feel free to use that if needed.

Patience, a virtue?

Ceramics does not provide the instant gratification I am so used to. There are many stages of process with kiln visits and drying time thrown in between. It is testing my patience threshold. One one hand, it provides time to think about the next step as opposed to just going for it, which is my usual fashion; on the other....well, it's just a waiting game.

It is good for my ADD brain, that is a benefit. So while waiting I work on other projects! Thursday I trekked to Dripping Springs to my old j.o.b. to make stretcher bars for some painitngs! Here are some snapshots of my production. That resource has proven itself over and over again to be a godsend when I need to build stuff, etc. Thanks Ted.

Then, I headed to Dougherty again to continue sample making for classes.

I have been designing a coffee table book about my tangent trailer project from awhile back. I'm flip flopping between computer programs to get the final look just right, but hopefully soon it will be done. There is an obsession to have my whole life documented and organized into these books. All on a bookshelf for perusal. This desire to do so eludes me, but I have to do it.

I ventured to the Dougherty Arts School, where I will be begin teaching in November, to make acquaintance with the ceramics studio and produce a few samples for the workshops. I was all alone and just had a ball. The smell, the standard equipment and ways all seem the same since the last time I graced a traditional clay studio (a decade ago). I'm anticipating my workshops and looking forward to them evolving into bigger & better classes; but I need to get back in the swing of things first.

Dogs & Donkeys & Cats, Oh My!

It all started as a holiday gift for some close friends who own miniature donkeys. Never touted myself as a realistic painter, but it was easy as paint by numbers with my method; plus they are not true lifelike in the traditional sense in my opinion.

The process:
find a picture I like,
print out to desired size,
use carbon paper to trace patches of color or shadow, etc,
connect the dots.

That painting led to a pet portrait donation for a lucky winner, then posting that on lovely Facebook led to other interest all of which lands me to my third pet portrait EVER....Archie the cat. Or should I say THE cat of all cats? I was roommates with Archie's mom and got to know Archibald (until we found out HE was a SHE) for a couple years. Here it is a decade or so later and she is a most beloved member of the Bloom family still. With a baby Bloom on the way, and Archie in her golden years what better birthday gift for mommy than a painting. So Sig and I secretly planned and I must say, it turned out incredible for my abilities.

Next up, is Addie and then possibly some more donkeys. WHO EVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT I would be decent enough at this that people are interested in more? Thanks guys! I'm flattered. So, I leave you here with some images of the 3 I have finished so far.

I'm in love. I want. Must go someday.
How amazing would this be to participate in. Sounds like multidisciplinary heaven to me. I have never given myself the gift of attending one of the many art centers around the country such as Anderson Ranch, Penland, Haystack or Arrowmont. I've taken little workshops, but nothing that I am immersed in day in and day out for a length of time. Continuing education is critical and I've fallen off the wagon. Perhaps this will inspire.

It bewilders me when I think about how ahead of my time I can be. I mean, I knew about Birkenstocks back in the 80's before their popularity spread like wildfire! Throughout my lifetime this has happened, however this is a big one and I really need to know...

Where were all the trailer park eateries and shops when I owned my Airstream 5 years ago???? And where was MY VISION when I became fascinated (okay, obsessed) with them 10 years ago???? Why did I not receive the memo from the Airstream fanatics about the "phenomenon" that was about to take place????

I KNOW there was a secret society, and I was not invited.

Okay, I had a vision, I just didn't do with with the gusto these brilliant people have. The invasion of the Airstream dreamers is alive and being well received here in Austin, Texas. Cupcake trailers, gift boutiques, gormet taco stands, yummy crepe noshins, hamburger joints, a smore house, a mobile craft studio? Let me count the ways folks have been using their creative juices and travel trailers to contribute to a more weird Austin, and I believe this is not just limited to Austin, as it has been spreading throughout the world like a never ending Gobstopper. Did it start with The Shady Dell in Bisbee, Arizona, and move onto more boutique airstream hotels like The Grand Daddy's Airstream Penthouse Trailer Park in Cape Town?

What came first: Hey, Cupcake? or Daisy Cakes

Whatever, or whomever started this, the trend has been happening for years and continues to grow. I just sold my travel trailer/studio a few months back, but now seeing clever ideas like this makes me swoon for more.

1. Good Morning! I thought I would start the AM off with another video. In my wildest dreams everyone would break out into spontaneous song and dance like in Grease. This is one step better I believe. I can't stop watching it. Please enjoy...

"More than 200 dancers were performing there version of "Do Re Mi", in the Central Station of Antwerp. with just 2 rehearsals they created this amazing stunt! Those 4 fantastic minutes started the 23 of march 2009, 08:00 AM. It is a promotion stunt for a Belgian television program, where they are looking for someone to play the leading role, in the musical of "The Sound of Music."

2. I am excited to announce that I officially launched my licensing career recently as one of my images was picked up by Artists to Watch for their Holiday 2009 greeting card line. Click here to see it and thanks to everyone at ATW for everything.

Plus, I woke to a message from my former prof. at TX St. University (thanks Michel) letting me know they featured it in a little blip on the Art & Design dept. website. Awe...that makes me smile.

1. I'm hunkering down in the studio getting ready for Art City Austin. I'm very nervous & excited about my first juried art festival. So, I'll be super busy in the next couple weeks freaking out and painting and packing! If you are in the Austin area, please stop by! Here are some details:

Dates: April 25-26, 2009

Hours: Saturday, 10am - 6pm & Sunday, 11am - 6pm

Location: Art City Austin 2009 will be held along Cesar Chavez Street from Colorado Street to Lamar, including the S. 1st Street Bridge. Entrances are located on Cesar Chavez at Guadalupe + Colorado + Lamar and the S. 1st Street Bridge (1st Street at Riverside).

Admission: Adults - $8.00 (one day) $15 (2-day Art Pass)
Children 12 and under - FREE
Art activites - $1.00 per activity.

2. Yesterday, I got together with some crafty ladies for what I'm hoping will be Art Club V.2; a once a month get together to make art with friends. We simply dyed eggs to make Cascarones for Easter. It was a total blast to do on an amazing spring day in Texas!

3. Two visits to the carnival this week! A friend's family owns it and they are in Austin this time, so we went and rode fun rides and ate candy apples. Brilliant fun. I took lots of video footage and want to make a little iMovie soon with some awesomely creepy carny music! Be on the lookout!

1. Here is a sneak peek into what I've been up to in the studio over the last week. Having my work so close to me since moving out of the trailer is convenient & enjoyable. I just go back and forth to the garage and house working. They are not finished, so be kind. :)

2. I forgot to mention a really great conversation with an old friend/studiomate I had a couple weeks ago. We had not spoken this candidly in a while and it was so refreshing and needed on my end. The talk really helped me to let go of some pre-conceived 'notions' I have had and so called standards I expected myself to uphold...even if wasn't in the best interest of the art I was producing. So, thank you Brandon. You are appreciated!

3. Amazingly lovely weather for SXSW week. If you are anywhere near Austin this time of year...you hear the hummmmm of music and the music lovers have flocked to central Texas for SXSW. Official and unofficial offerings are a plenty and there is no reason to stay inside. Some of the BEST people watching you'll ever get! 1. I'm trying to embrace the recent move out of my trailer and into my garage as I am trying to sell said trailer/studio. I decided, after much agony, that it was time to get more space. And my garage provides just that, and saves me money. So, there ya go. I'm sad to leave that part of my studio life behind, but looking forward to being able to work from home.

2. I am now an officially licensed artist. Yay. Artists to Watch will be carrying a greeting card with one of my images on it for their Holiday 2009 line. 100% recycled paper and soy based inks!!!!! Woo ah!

3. A clean dog!

4. Having a couple of days off to get things done!

1. Unexpected gorgeous shadows.

I took these pictures with my phone and was really delighted with their turnout. It is from the permanant sculpture outside of the Blanton Museum here in Austin. We frolicked through the long rubber tubing hanging down in a 10ft square curtain.

2. Sunday brunch with lovely friends at Olivia.

I highly recommend the yummy brioche french toast with pears and the smoked German ham & gruyere cheese omlette!

3. Blanton Museum visit to see opening day of "Birth of the Cool" inspired by Miles Davis' album of the same name.

You know, I'm such a slow writer, and I long to blog more often but don't, as it gets a tad burdensome for me. My friend Carrie Elkin makes a list of her top five highlights of the day (or every few days), a "Sweet List of Goodness" she calls it. I think I will follow her and the unsuspecting Devon's lead and create my own weetle wist.

So, now introducing....a list I haven't named yet...

1. Jurying my first art event EVER (high school). Even though I find it hard to "judge" art, the point was to give the kids positive feedback and to encourage them to further explore their creative endeavors. It was an experience I hope to have again. I interviewed a couple dozen kids, met some cool peeps and then went on to help determine state qualifiers. Thanks to my new friend, Cristina for the awesome opportunity!

2. Attending retiring prof. Neal Wilson's retrospective art exhibit at TX State Univ. Gallery. I never had him as an instructor...in fact, I never took a painting class...but he is of the generation of profs that I love so much and I wanted to support that. It was completely enjoyable.

3. Chatting & catching up with Michel Conroy (my old cermics prof) & getting a studio tour.

4. Seeing my dears...Derrick, Brandon, Kat, Bunny, Michael, not Robyn, and Red10 studio.

Hello Again...

WOW. It has been entirely too long since my last posting. Frankly, it's hard to say anything has really been going on, so you haven't missed much.

This year's resolution has been to simplify as much as possible, so I made the horribly hard decision to sell my trailer to a new loving owner. This conclusion was based on several realities and believe it or not, the trailer might just end up in it's first home on S.1st Street where my shop was. I have been working extra hard in between sickness & nursing the sick and the trailer is almost ready for presentation to possible buyers. Admittedly, I've been obsessing over details and perfections so it is just right for the new owner and it is impressive how nice it's looking. It is bittersweet, but I still feel confident about the decision. I felt for so long that there would be disappointment among my friends who have helped and supported me on the project, however I feel they would ultimately want me to be happy, unburdened and free to create in a space that is conducive to my groove. Thank you!

Blue Genie aRT Bazaar has commenced!

Well, kids...the Blue Genie Art Bazaar is underway and got kick started with an official opening party last night (of which I didn't make it to). The caliber of work and the displays are of exceptionally higher quality this year. Two purchases of art were already made on my part as I couldn't resist. I could have spent more dinero, but I didn't want to blow my wad on the first night. We'll see what resonates in my mind and then we'll go for it.

well, I'm exhausted, but gearing up for another long week of artwork in the studio as i have to set up for Blue Genie Art Bazaar this next Sunday. it doesn't even feel like a holiday week! i'll be spending my turkey day morning in the studio instead of doing the Turkey Trot with all my friends and family. boo. but it's exciting non the less.

this past weekend was the East Austin Studio Tour, and it went well. i sold a big ole painting and made lots of new acquaintances and just had a great time. all of my friends showed up and that really meant so much. i don't know if they realize how much i need their support, but i do. here are some pics of the weekend. unfortunately, i wasn't able to get away to see other art aside from ours, but someone out there will enjoy these pics.

So, our Halloween Party was last night and we had so much fun. We fed our friends a lovely dinner and drank lots of wine; danced a little bit and summoned the owl that we are trying to get to nest in our owl house. It was lovely. This morning when I woke I immediately started thinking of the next things on my calendar and now I'm a little overwhelmed.

November is fastly approaching. There is so much going on for me that month (work & play) and a lot of prep going on for these events. The East Austin Studio Tour is around the corner and so is Blue Genie Art Bazaar; both of which i am participating in. Well, actually, I'm "unoffically" on the E.A.S.T. tour...but my studio-mates are and so I am a 'guest' artist there...come see my studio & buy art!!! It is November 22-23 from 10am-5pm and features over 100 galleries and studios that are open to the public for viewing and perusing.

Then Blue Genie starts two weeks after that. this one i am 'officially' in. It's a 22 day shopping extravaganza for all things Austin art! Sooooo much fun and so much great art. I'm going to have plenty of notecards and prints this year to help those tightening their purse strings.

i finished the invite for our Halloween party. i'm pretty pleased with them. i ended up over thinking the entire project, getting very confused as to which version i should send...but this is the compromise. i'm not one to use a drop shadow, but it seemed to fit for this. it's mounted on a black card.
oh, and then i found this invite, which blew my mind and decided to change everything at the last minute, but DJ talked me out of it (for this year). i LOVE printing on transparency film, so this inspiration might end up helping me for the 2009 party.

after the shitty ass nightmare of a Tuesday got joyously marked off my calandar (in RED and after 2 margaritas and 2 glasses of wine), i managed to have myself a pretty decent Wednesday (considering I am still in shock and my stomach turns every time i think about said Terrible Tuesday). i took Denver hiking on the Greenbelt, wrote some necessary letters and ended up at the studio where i actually got some stuff done! yay. oh, and lined up a little bit of work to provide some sort of cash flow. so, all in all, okay day.

i am currently drinking my tea, then will go hiking again and venture to the studio for a repeat of yesterday! yay. here are some crappy images of the work i got done yesterday. some not quite finished, but i'm still really interested to see how this series plays out.

while everyone was at ACL yesterday (and all weekend), i took some time to venture to my old stomping grounds, San Marcos, with old school mates/friends for Eric Weller's Photography Exhibit opening at Texas State University. i never had Eric as a professor, but i used it as an opportunity to hopefully run into the ones i did have in undergrad and who so influenced my life. i got to see Michel Conroy which i was so happy about. she was my ceramics prof (which was my concentration). we spoke briefly, which is typical of such events..brief discussion...and vowed to keep in better touch. it meant a lot to me to have her say that. since graduating, there is always this sense of 'am i letting my old teachers down by not being this awesome artist who is teaching, blah blah blah" and she really validated me in positive ways last evening and it was relieving. it's like letting down your parents in a way...no one wants to do it, but you live your life to the best of your abilities and see where the pieces fall. here it is 10 years later, and she still said "it's not too late" to go to grad school. not something that i am currently considering, but she still believes in me and that is awesome. thanks michel!

it was a pleasant surprise to run into my friend Derrick and have a few drinks one on one before other friends showed up at The Restless Wind for fun times. i miss these people in my life and the discussions that can happen. i need to make a better effort to stay in contact with them. fo sho.

Purple Rain

Last evening we went to an awesome event with a cosmic ending. After days of 'preparing' for hurricane Ike, expecting horrific wind and inches upon inches of rain, Ike took a turn and ended up giving us NOTHING...maybe 5mph winds. We went along with our plans to attend a Prince Tribute Night.

Purple attire, purple drinks, purple makeup and nails later we walked over to the Scoot Inn and settled in for a hot and humid night of dancing our booties off to the likes of Foot Patrol. By the end of the night we were tired and sweaty and having a blast and just at the end of the set, right as TJ was about to perform Purple Rain...the heavens opened up and poured down upon us. As soon as the show was over, the rain stopped and left us sopping and walking home giddy in the puddles it left behind.

Our beloved restaurant in downtown Austin has apparently closed for good. The cinnamon coffee and refried beans we awoke thinking about on Sunday mornings for the last 3 years and the Chilaquiles Verdes i've loved for over 10 years is gone. I'm so upset...

"Surprise and shock coursing through Downtown workers, nearby City Hall staffers and Chilaquiles enthusiasts across town: venerable eatery and community hub Las Manitas has closed its doors, apparently "forever," with seating, equipment, and even the floor ripped up.

Texas Monthly (who's Manitas-enthused editor Evan Smith must be crying in his michelada right now) has the details, but the "closed forever" sign up at the establishment seems pretty definitive – and doesn't bode well for the eatery's plans to move up the block into the La Pena art gallery Las Mas proprietors Cynthia and Lidia Perez own.

"Las Manitas closed forever on August 31 according to Cynthia Perez (one of the owners). The restaurant will probably be replaced with a complex of three new Marriott hotels.

City council initially tried to convince the Perez sisters to move a few doors down by providing financial assistance in the form of a forgivable loan to the restaurant, but public outcry caused some council members to attach strings to the loan and the owners backed away from the deal.

According to the Statesman, no permits have been filed to indicate that Las Manitas will move without the loan. Marriott developers have applied for demolition permits for the restaurant and other buildings on the block (except for the two landmark buildings on the northwest corner, which will stay in place). They expect to begin construction of the hotel complex next year."

Time Travel

yesterday, i went to visit my friend Kayci at her shop Moxie and the Compound (& picked up a nice check...surprise!). after catching up, she drug me over to this shop i have been meaning to check out for sometime now...Aviary. she thought my work would look smashing in their space and after talking with the delightful owner, Marco, and showing him some of my newest work we decided to work towards an installation of my work. one big 'piece' containing all the smaller pieces. i have always been in love with the concept of a ton of small items making up a larger piece. there is a monumental aspect about it that fascinates me.

we also discussed (over wine) other possibilities of more permanent or large scale designs. i had told him of my desire to actually make one of the pieces an actual mural and using 3D elements (like floating shelves with objects on them) to implement as part of the design. to actually make up the "imagery" of the piece (we're talking about those 'background' pieces i just showed you here . Yay!

i am just so pleased and taken back by the thought that design processes & application techniques i used close to ten years ago can still be considered contemporary and refined enough to be utilized in today's decor. it just goes to show that art is timeless and not trendy and it's a breath of fresh air to me to see that right now.

i see a full circle ahead.

SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET - ramblings

lately, i've been a little nostalgic. with the recent activity of 'high school reunions' on Facebook, i've been thinking of that era in my life...sometimes reluctantly, sometimes with a smile on my face; and then the recent re-discovery of some artwork i did in college, it all has caused me to revisit past processes and techniques and loves...mainly in art.

i've been struggling with the over saturated blogland out there because there is so much amazing talent and i get so wrapped up in the brilliance, it sometimes leads to intimidation. and then, sometimes i'll see ideas that i had once thought of doing being done and it upsets me that i didn't get to it sooner. so, then that leads to paralysis, of the creative kind. it's one big self sabotage snowball. I look at blogs and the lack of fear written in them, they are so confident and show no vulnerability. i like to show mine sometimes, i am human. ALL artists are vulnerable, some just choose to not show it and that is fine. for me, wearing it on my sleeve (occasionally) is okay.

here are some new pieces i have been working on. more on the fine art side, if you will. they don't have imagery on them yet, but will. i do love them just the way the are though too...so i am sort of torn. i'm thoroughly enjoying the process of making them and the way they evolve and the fact that the techniques i'm using don't allow for complete control. accidental art maybe? with a hint of deliberateness.

as for the blog front, i'm on a bit of a fast. i will visit my faves of course, but try not to get wrapped up and spend more time in the studio.

and here is a computer sketch i did before i physically did any of the paintings/collages. to give you a hint of what i am after!

TAIL BLING

My dog might have to have the tip of his tail amputated! We spent the first half of the day at the ER vet clinic as Denver cut the crap out of his tail at the dog washing place. He sliced it on a piece of torn sheet metal. Poor guy! The dog place was super nice about it all and are graciously picking up the tab. It was a simple accident. We won't know about the amputation until tomorrow or next week. The tip of the tail has hardly any circulation, so it might not want to heal. So we just wait to see. He has such a cute little piggie curl on the tip complete with a kink in it, I'd hate to see it go. We'll hope for the best. For now, he looks like he has a big golf ball on the end of his tail with the bandages.

So, when my friend Renee helped me install the new electrical wiring in the trailer everything seemed to work after we finished. Since moving the trailer to the East side, some of the outlets and light boxes have decided to not work. Poo!

I found someone (that hopefully pans out!) that is willing to trade some electrical work for art thru Craigslist! I am so excited and hope it works out!!!!!!!!!!!

i've had this desire to make little art blocks for awhile now. you know, like alphabet blocks but with designs, drawings or bits on them. small pieces that can be showcased on a shelf not the wall. to be stacked on top of each other if one so wishes. i am going to experiment today with the idea. it's even more portable than my little bite sized paintings.

I reluctantly went. I wasn't up for all of the emo lesbo sing-a-long because they "get me" shit, but I went because J bought me a ticket. It was hot too and I don't do well in heat. J and T went early (as they normally do) and got their spot, so by the time B and I got there we had excellent sight of the stage. Brandi Carlyle opened and she blew me away. I wasn't expecting it. She has an amazing voice. And the Indigo Girls, as trite as it is to see them, are FLIPPING BRILLIANT in concert. They were 'acoustic' and it was beautiful and they loved hearing us sing, and I did sing along (I normally hate singing along at shows, but I had to...it's required at IG shows). It was like being at a campfire sing a long and they are so grateful. Damn it, I had a blast...reluctantly, mind you.

a couple of months ago, i was contacted by an advertising agency in NYC saying they wanted to feature me in a project. turns out Camel has or is going to have a feature on their website that shows interviews of emerging artists...and they wanted to come down and video me and my space for this project. and it is a paid gig (never a bad thing). i got all excited and now...after some communication and questions on their part...absolutely no contact from this adv. agency. i was contacted by another person there saying she was working on the project too now and to call her back...i did, and emailed and haven't heard anything. i'm kind of upset that they got my hopes all up and then just drop me like that...i have NO clue what is going on and they were saying it was going to happen in the new year once my trailer was finished. last time i talked with anyone there was in Nov. and she said they actually wanted to come out in 2-3 week from then...that is the last i heard from anyone there.

i'm kinda totally bummed out.

so, i emailed the original girl on the project and have just been waiting for contact from them. i've done all i can to let them know i'm still interested. if i do anymore, it will be harassing, so i just find myself constantly hoping to have an email in my inbox whenever i check my mail.

Well, E.A.S.T. is over and quite frankly a big ole blur at this point. I spent all of last week painting the walls, sealing the seams, shop vacuuming several times, and tending to other details. It was a long week. I slept for 12 hours Saturday night. Basically the trailer is in move in condition, with other little projects still needing to be done...but I am just at a point where I'm sick of it being under construction. I will design my workspace after the holidays/Blue Genie/etc. For now, I'll work in it's haphazard-ness. It is perty though.

my sis came into town with her 10 week old bebe to visit me. i made her a nice dinner and we drank wine. i went to open the second bottle and in it's un-openess dropped it on my big toe! i fell to the ground and ended up balling it hurt so badly. we were amazed this AM to find it wasn't broken, but looks so bad. doesn't help my already growing out toenails from last springs high heel toe bruising incident...my poor toesies....

I was to meet the man I hired off Craigslist yesterday to move my trailer to it's new home, but he freakin' stood me up. It was a terrible inconvenience. I hope he is okay, and if he did stand me up...then gosh darn it...thanks buddy!

I did have a back up and we have scheduled to move it next Sunday. Cutting it close, but that's okay. I met with a gentleman tonight who is going to work on finishing up the inside for me!! yay again! I'm really hoping to have it finished by East Austin Studio Tour...since my future studio-mates are on the tour and I'll get spin off from that. That is in the middle of November. And my weekends are filling up, but I think we've got it figured out.

Fundraiser Success

We had a wildly successful fundraiser for my studio this weekend. I can believe how many of my old school friends came and hung out and donated! WOW. My friends are so incredible. I made enough dinero to get my trailer moved and finished on the inside. yay! I can't write about it all, because it doesn't do the amount of coolness that happened that day justice. i have a confession. in the year since becoming a full time artist, i have become increasingly unhappy with making art. i thought i'd be different, one of those people who gets up smiling...making my coffee and heading straight to the studio. it wasn't as romantic as that. but have become more of a commercial artist than wanted. it took awhile to figure out exactly WHAT was making me unhappy. this past weekend, it all became clear after a heart to heart.

it's by shear luck that i've been able to explore this career for the last 3 years...owning a shop and being a full time artist were two of my dreams. being able to grow and learn as a small biz owner, meet so many wonderful people around the world (via the internet), and have the time to figure out likes and dislikes of it all has been a great experience. however, not having the store and just doing my art full time has been challenging emotionally (and financially to be quite honest). don't get me wrong, i LOVE making art...but the pressure of having to make a living at it has sucked the life out of me. i had to learn this on my own, and i'm glad i did.

i am switching gears. i've found myself in a position of possibly expanding my teaching experience with a Montessori school here in Austin. this is so thrilling, and a chance to try something else i've wanted to do. i'll know more in the next week or two. i feel drawn to this opportunity. it's a full time position, which will change my priorities and i think that is going to be a good thing for my art. it does mean, however, that i won't have as much inventory...however i believe the quality of my work will only get better.

the studio is STILL on the agenda...it's getting ready to be moved and i'm having a fundraiser to help offset costs of that. i still will be painting, but will be able to explore more techniques and new imagery without the pressure of having to sell the piece and hurrying up to finish it. i am still going to make some jewelry and pottery! i can't wait to spin some clay. i've been dying to do that for a long time now.

i can't tell you how much better i feel now...just having the stress of not having to make a living off my art is SOOO huge. i'm excited to learn more about teaching the Montessori method and helping toddlers learn. wish me luck!

Sadly, the place where my trailer/studio has been located is going to be no longer. Happiness is having to give up their retail space as one of the owners has to move to Houston. They are however, holding onto the old Spunky Monkey Ranch behind the current space to host arts & garden events. Unfortunately, this means my studio needs to move. I am most likely moving it across the I-35 hwy to the east side. My friend Lisa Crowder & her studio mate Ryan McKerley have a nice little space over there. I think it will be a good move!

my power cord for my computer died and i have been patiently waiting on my new one to get here. i have missed the internet. apparently, i was on the Etsy front page again. i wish i had more inventory to keep in my store there, but i DO plan on changing that soon!!! i really want it to be the place where you can purchase prints and paperie of my work.

i finished and installed my new 15 paintings up at Kerby Lane this afternoon. i will get the images on my website over the weekend. as i will be working on my stuff for the online gallery sale on tuesday.

randomness and lockdown, once again

i have been preparing for a show I'm installing this Thursday at Kerby Lane Cafe. after coming home from Houston after my nephew's birth, i have been somewhat overwhelmed with unsatisfactory feelings in regard to my art. let me preface this with, don't be fooled..all artists go thru this..not all blog about it..we aren't always that put together and happy with our work....i have just chosen to write about it so it might give you a glimpse into my process. this last week i have all of the sudden wanted to quit it all. do something totally different...not art related. i have been so depressed by this. no inspiration, motivation, sensory overload and boredom had set in. it made me so sad, because the last 10 years i have worked to get to this point...a full time artist. and now, I'm not satisfied????? WTF? I'm an extremist sometimes and this was one of those moments when i just wanted to walk away completely.

i played the lotto.

Jean and i were at dinner, and i was talking to her about all of this. then, serendipity stepped in. as we were chatting i opened my fortune cookie and low and behold it said "your creativity takes you to great heights." HELLO! okay universe, i get it. talk about tapping you on the shoulder. anyways, we started talking about money (because that has something to do with my dissatisfaction) and decided that if there was ever a time to play the lotto with the numbers off a fortune...this was that time.

needless to say, we didn't win. poo.

BUT, i was warmed and comforted by two things during this. as i was drifting off to sleep that serendipitous night, of course i fantasized about what i would do with all that money. my thought was to have a ceramics studio....and i would give my art away. i like that thought. the other, was a discussion with my friend Dewayne that made me feel like a valued artist and that i deserve to be successful and happy. for some reason, i believe him.

i was obsessed in middle school....i mean, posters everywhere.

but, much to my denial, he is an old man now! gasp. i mean, he's not really that old at all, but he's not the cutey pie i remember from the 80's. i keep finding pictures of him and am in total disbelief. when did this happen? oh yeah, in the last 20 years i haven't paid attention to Duran Duran. HA.

still, i am disappointed to have found time didn't stand still in order to allow my never ending love for Mr. JT to stay young.

whew...it is H O T. and of course, today was lots o labor day for me. i thought i'd give you a glimpse into part of the process i go thru to make you beautiful paintings. this is the grunt work...building boxes to paint on.

i have 4'x8' sheets of 1/4" plywood cut down (to fit into my car) and then i cut it into the desired size in my garage.

then, thru the magic of not taking anymore pics of the process (going to my former workplace at a frame shop and building the actual boxes) voila there are some boxes...now i am going to sand them down so i can paint!

branding

there are several things i am proud of when it comes to running my own biz. one of the things that i have been wishy washy about is my branding. now, i realize i have a recognizable style...however i keep waivering when it comes to the small things like a "logo" or a website skin. i change my biz card design every time i order new ones. i am always criticizing my headers for blog and etsy. and fonts....oh don't get me started.

my dear friend over at The Grackle and I spent some quality time together Wed night as we drank these really darn good micheladas at Scoot Inn and listened to the bartenders wicked cool itunes (i wanted it so bad). porch time rocks, i love it...one on one time with those you love...nothing is better.

Micheladas (wicked good altered recipe)

1 salt rimmed pint glass filled to the rim with ice
juice of one lime
some olive juice
crushed olives
mexican beer (XX)
top off with a little bloody mary mix

YUM.

i got a job

don't worry, it's super part time. i've started sub teaching at the Dougherty Arts Center, a great arts school here in Austin. pre-schooler art...it's so fun. and i'm doing it to conquer a fear i have had since graduating college 10 years ago...teaching.

and now today i think i got a job Dirty Dog, self serve doggie wash just one day out of the week. that will be the fun get me out of the studio job.

okay, i am in awe now of the power of the internet and women run blogs!! i have been hosting my online gallery sale now for a while, and this month i decided to send out on official press release to some of my FAVE bloggers. little did i know that i would receive so much support. i believe it is thanks to these ladeez and their readers that my sale yesterday was an incredible success. i had a record amount of hits on my website too.

that is why i have to give the biggest shout outs to these blogs, because without ya'll, we all wouldn't know where to find all these exceptional designers and artists you find.

Studio Boot Camp

after taking yesterday off, i am going back into the studio to do some more work. i got about 25 tiny paintings done for Happiness' Cactus Show this weekend and now i am going to work on some jewelry for Parts & Labour and Moxie and the Compound. Lizelle at P&L has been harrassing me and it's high time i get them something.

then, i'll paint again all next week. i'm prepping for installing lots of paintings at Kerby Lane Cafe in late August and my Online Gallery Sale on Aug. 3rd.

i'm also working on a collaboration with Vintage Trialer Supply for some promo. that's exciting and i appreciate Steve getting in touch with me!

and then, and then, and then...i could go on, but i'll spare you...for now.
